Living Life On the Virtual Edge

What imagery does “over the top” conjure up? For some folks it is the ’87 Sly Stallone flick. For others, it's a renegade that takes things to the extreme. But ask the question to a Telecom Service Provider and don’t be surprised if they have daggers in their eyes! Why so? Let’s look at what Wikipedia has to say about it – “In broadcasting, over-the-top content refers to delivery of audio, video, and other media over the Internet without the involvement of a multiple-system operator in the control or distribution of the content.

What’s Missing from Government’s Security Wish List?

There is no question that security is becoming one of government’s top IT concerns. Breaches have become so frequent that it is no longer a question of if they will occur, but when.

According to a GAO report, the number of security incidents at federal agencies that have involved the potential exposure of citizens’ personal information has increased from 10,400 in 2009 to more than 25,500 in 2013. As network security remains the most critical area of vulnerability prevention, government agencies are in need of next-gen solutions that don’t stifle innovation.

MWC Preview - Analytics, Machine Learning and Mobile Networking

Just about every day there is a press release where “big data,” “real-time” and “analytics” - along with machine learning - are being advertised as a breakthrough technologies that will enable business and operational transformation for mobile service providers. While it is true that mobile data analytics create new opportunities, with the notable exception of the nascent introduction of machine learning to the “analytics toolkit,” the technology is far from revolutionary.

MWC Preview - SDN for Mobile Networks

Software Defined Networking (SDN) has been an industry buzzword for some time. The promise of separating control plane and data plane, and implementing an intelligent controller has created communities of open source developers (e.g. OpenDaylight), standards development in IETF (e.g. I2RS and SFC) and spawned an entirely new approach to networking appliances with NFV to tackle topics such as network programmability and network service chains. Across the landscape, many of the use-cases in these organizations focus on mobile networks. My colleague, and Brocade CTO of Mobile Networks, Kevin Shatzkamer, thinks that SDN could be the single biggest opportunity for operational improvement in mobile networks since the transition from circuit switching to packet switching.

Last year, 2014, was our first presence at Aruba Atmosphere – for myself and for Brocade – and we were graciously welcomed by the Airheads community. As new Aruba partners we had a great opportunity to showcase unified wired/wireless solutions., featuring demonstrations of our integration points with AirWave and ClearPass. Additionally, as a leader in Software-Defined Networking (SDN), our breakout sessions drew a lot of attention and we received a lot of interesting feedback from the community about their views on SDN in the campus.

Over the past year, the partnership has grown stronger with delivery of the promised joint software integration and many joint customer deployments and success stories. We’ve worked jointly to make the customer experience seamless across the wired and wireless networks for both end-users and network administrators – with joint software development and unified technical support services. Customers like Levi's (SF 49ers) Stadium, Kilgore College and Westmark School attest to the importance and value of this partnership.

SDN Applications In the New IP Must Focus on Traffic Flows

$

Service providers continue to be challenged with the explosive network traffic growth based on mobility, cloud and video services as evidenced with their demands for large 100Gbps transport links and beyond. At the same time, service providers need to continue deploying new technologies and services to stay competitive and address the needs of their customers. In building their next-gen networks service providers aim to be efficient and cost effective while leveraging new technologies such as network virtualization, big data analytics and IP Voice (VoLTE & VoWIFI), which in turn come with their own challenges. And this all needs to be completed while addressing concerns around things like security, increased network visibility and more granular service flow management. These must be addressed as part of enabling new services successfully.
